Jonathan Cherry

Jonathan takes some lovely snaps, generally of things in Britain which is always a treat in these Americanized times, loads on his website

(how clever was it of me to spell amercanised in an americanised way? ...very fucking clever... although I'm starting to doubt you can spell it with an S...anybody?)

Americanized/Americanised? Noah Webster wrote his great dictionary as an aid to US national identity & was perfectly justified in using Zs where British culture uses Ss. The Z is probably more traditional English, anyway. In support of that, The Times until the 1970s used the Z -- eg, in "realize" -- as well as oddities such as "tire" for "tyre". Me, I'd reform our spelling. Why do we need so many different pronunciations for "ough" (through, tough, bough, etc.) ? And how long is it since anyone pronounced an L in would/should/could? I know I'm goofing off but it's more fun than working, which is what I should be doing right now. Actually, think I'll make mesel another coffee...
