Sorry posts have dried up recently, I started a different job and have far less time to imbibe and share cultural snippets. I keep meaning to do a new music round up, hopefully I will get round to it soon, maybe a radioshow or a spotify albums thing. In the mean time I'd listen to Sufjan's new Ep and Lp if i were you, you can get them really easily for $5 and $8 here which is nothing considering the quality of the work.

So The Arcade Fire are back. I think the new album is great, a proper album that can be invested in during these times of change. The other week they streamed a gig online, you can watch most of it on their youtube channel in hi def (I have relatively modern computer now so I can take advantage of such things for the first time in the history of Tom) I'd draw particular attention to Win's introduction to Power Out, gotta love that shit. The youtube channel is full on sponsorship which is surprising for Arcade Fire but I heard that was so they can give the money to Haiti, probably true so we'll let em off.

While we're talking about the financial crisis, Michael Lewis' book The Big Short is bloody amazing, Ira Glass recommended it in this interview and he was right. It's basically about people who saw the financial crisis happening well before it did, it explains the whole thing brilliantly and contains unbelievable knowledge about who and what was involved. The best new band I saw at The Great Escape was easily Esben and the Witch. Dark, atmospheric, Brighton based, and haunting are all words that seem related. They are playing Latitude, Truck, Field Day and Standon calling I think.

A note about Great Escape if you want it. I think it's safe to say we all had a great time, even though it's not very conducive for seeing bands, with all the bands playing at the same time, the venues being spread out and queue being a big issue at the larger venues. It seems a lot more set up for brands to associate with our coolness, every stage and event is aligned with an energy drink or some shit. Having said that Brighton is such a cool place for hanging out none of that really mattered, for every queue there was a a nice tea shop or a cheap chorizo stall to cancel it out.

As always I tried to make it fresh music that you might not have heard, music that I really love, and an album that has a flow and feel of it's own. I tried to make the artwork fit the music, I wanted something lo-fi, youthful, and dare I say it, visceral. I hope you enjoy it, any feedback positive or negative is very much welcomed, you know tracks you like, tracks you hate etc.

My favourites are probably Gauntlet Hair (which is coming out on Gorilla vs Bear Record label Forest Family), Wu Lyf which have blogged about and Memory House the last (completely depressing) track.

Choosing who to vote is pretty straight forward ideologically innit but all the logistical gubbins about having to vote Labour to keep Tories out can be a real ball ache, this Guardian site hopefully helps by showing the lie of the land where you live (as well as useful stuff like who the fuck your MP is) where I live Tories are quite far behind in 3rd so I should be able to vote for who I like...they only sell Guardians in the shops in Hackney so we should be alright. Interestingly enough Diane Abbott lives on my street and I would vote for her in a shot but unfortunately she aint my MP it's gun toting, Trident Voting Meg Hillier. If you haven't registered to vote you can do it up to 11 days before the election I think.

I don't know about you but personally while I was at Uni I completely lost touch with most of the civilised world, I thought I was on top of things but apparently looking at the headlines and pictures on Guardian unlimited isn't enough, so many things passed me by, The Thick of It and Eric Cantona leaving Man U spring to mind but there is much else including State of Play the BBC series. I'm sure it was said at the time but it has to be one of the best British dramas ever; The story line deftly played out over 6 episodes is phenomenal, the directing by David Yates of Harry Potter 5/6/7/8 is perfect, and the acting is unsurprisingly superb. You can buy all 6 episodes for £4.99 with free postage from HMV.com imagine that.

(For some reason I bought the US remake film as well, will probably never watched it, seems quite pointless)

Just incase you haven't tried it Football Weekly is a great football podcast, it's James and some Guardian journalists chatting about recent and upcoming football action, there's some quality banter and informed opinions...which I find really useful because even though I love football I don't watch enough of it and subsequently flounder in the pub banter stakes.

Released on a Monday and Thursday I think, can play it straight from the page or subscribe in Itunes.

Re: Oscars, glad The Hurt Locker won stuff I loved it, although it could be a case of in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king, disappointed A Prophet and Fantastic Mr Fox lost out, I think Best Foreign Film should be allowed into Best Film Category if they are going to have 10 nominations.
